Chrysoprase

Overview
Chrysoprase is a member of the quartz family and is a variety of chalcedony. It is usually found in a beautiful apple green color, but sometimes is found in a deeper green. Chrysoprase is translucent and very bright in color. Chrysoprase is believed to facilitate self-expression, courage, and the ability to use them wisely. Chrysoprase is found in Queensland, Australia, and many other parts of the world.

About the Stone

Chrysoprase sits at a 6-7 on the Mohs Scale. It is a variety of chalcedony and a member of the Quartz family. The name chrysoprase comes from Greek meaning gold leek. Chrysoprase is also sometimes referred to as "Australian Jade".

The best quality chrysoprase seems to be coming from Australia, but it is also found in Queensland, Germany, Tanzania, Poland, Russia, and Brazil. In the United States it is found in Arizona and California.

Chrysoprase has some very interesting stories surrounding it. In the 1800’s for example, if you were a thief set to be hung or beheaded, you would immediately escape if you placed chrysoprase in your mouth. Of course this was difficult to do unless you happened to carry a piece with you, in which case you probably didn't need to be stealing.

Alexander the Great was also a fan of chrysoprase, and supposedly wore it in his girdle during battle to ensure victory.

Chrysoprase is one of the rarer members of the Quartz family and many people consider it to be a prized piece in their collections. Chrysoprase unique color comes from the traces of nickel found in it.

Metaphysical Properties

Chrysoprase helps to assist in self expression and courage; and it helps a person to use these abilities wisely. It provides grace and compassion and is believed to bring happiness. Some say chrysoprase helps balance energies and increase fertility. Chrysoprase helps the wearer get rid of negative thoughts and irritability.

Chrysoprase in Jewelry

Chrysoprase is usually cut into a cabochon style and is often found with matrix attached to the finished stone. Different price ranges of chrysoprase do exist, with high quality pieces being quite expensive. Some chrysoprase has been know to fade, however, so be sure a piece has had time to dry out and reach it’s true color spectrum before you purchase it. Chrysoprase may also be dyed to enhance the color when necessary.
