For a different take on birthstone earrings (August), I decided to make big hoop earrings that are nevertheless surprisingly light to wear. They remind me of a halo which decided me on their name. The hoop is formed out of solid thicker copper wire. It has been hammered flat a bit so that the wire wrapping will not slide around.
The wrapping itself is done with very thin copper wire and tiny 2mm peridot beads. For a stronger contrast, I have added a tourmaline colored Swarovski crystal.
The ear wires are hand formed (18 or 20g soft wire), hammered and tightly wrapped with copper wire and a tiny copper bead. The finished earrings are then tumble polished for added strength and shine.
They will tarnish over time as only untreated solid copper wire is used. Tarnished copper is easily brought back to shine by covering it in a bit of tomato sauce and rinsed after a minute or two.
