Howlite Meaning

Healing Properties of Howlite

Howlite is calming because it encourages you to “live and let live”, letting go of attachments that are causing stress and encouraging you to enjoy your life as it is without worrying about what others are doing. This in turn promotes true rest, which is why it is known for helping with insomnia.

Howlite as a Gemstone

Howlite is white and gray with dark gray marbling. It is a relatively recently discovered mineral that was found by gypsum miners. It is a soft stone, around 3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale (between Calcite and Fluorite).

Howlite is always white and gray in its natural state, but because it is porous, it is often dyed different colors. It is most often dyed blue to imitate turquoise, as its veining pattern gives it a superficial resemblance. Because of this, Howlite is sometimes called “white turquoise” but it is not actually related to turquoise. Other names for it include “buffalo stone”.

Dyed howlite vs genuine turquoise

How to tell them apart:

  • Genuine turquoise is more expensive.
  • The color of genuine turquoise is less even from bead to bead than a string of dyed howlite which will all be exactly the same color.
  • Swabbing your piece with nail polish remover will cause the dye to come off of howlite and reveal the white stone underneath. Please note that genuine turquoise is also sometimes dyed to enhance its color. Although it will still be blue underneath, it may be damaged by using nail polish remover on it, so be careful.
